NASCAR Suspends Sam Mayer From Xfinity Series Finale For Wrecking Jeb Burton At Martinsville

NASCAR has suspended Haas Factory Team Xfinity Series driver Sam Mayer for one race after a post-race incident at Martinsville.
Playoff driver Mayer, who failed to qualify for the Championship 4, turned Jeb Burton’s car during the cool-down lap because he didn’t like how he was racing him and was upset about a wreck the Burton caused the previous week at Talladega that he got caught up in.
“The 27 [Burton] did us no favors last week. He caused a demolition derby and a parking lot on the front straightaway at the fastest race track we go to, and now he just decides to be an absolute dumbass this go around and race a guy with a purple spoiler just awful. It was awful to be around him all day. He’s just fast enough to be really, really annoying but not fast enough to do anything else worth a damn,” Mayer said after the race.
“I race a lot of people out here with respect and I just want it back. He ran over me for no reason, so I gave it back to him and he threw a temper tantrum. I’d love to talk to him but there wouldn’t be much talking,” Burton said, according to NBC Sports. “The way he acts, he’s a punk. I think everybody knows that.”
“That is just not something we’re going to tolerate,” NASCAR senior vice president of competition Elton Sawyer said on SiriusXM NASCAR radio when discussing the penalty.
Haas Factory Team issued a statement saying it was disappointed with the results, but would not appeal the penalty.
Ryan Sieg will fill in for Mayer in the 41 car at the finale in Phoenix, but the car is not in contention for the owner’s championship.
