Chevy’s 1974 Spirit Of America Cars Were Ahead Of Their Time

Chevrolet has just revealed a new lineup of special edition vehicles that celebrate the USA’s upcoming 250th anniversary celebration.
The Stars and Steel Collection Corvette, Colorado and Silverado feature American flag-inspired graphics, “250” badges and other touches to commemorate the occasion, but Chevy has been down this road before.
Apparently too excited to wait for 1976, Chevrolet launched a Spirit of America package for the Impala Sport Coupe, Nova and Vega for 1974 in “America’s favorite colors.”
The white cars featured red, white and blue pinstripes, unique badging, and red carpets with the Impala getting white wheels with red, white and blue piping.

All were loaded with premium content and proved to be popular. Chevy sold roughly 14,000 Novas, 7,500 Vegas and 2,500 Impalas, and they remain collectibles today.

An Impala was equipped with a 350 cubic-inch V8 and three-speed automatic with 29,000 miles on the odometer was recently auctioned on the Bring a Trailer website, where it sold for $16,000, while the last Nova offered on the platform went for $20,000 with the same drivetrain.

As for why Chevrolet didn’t bring back the Spirit of America name for 2026, it might have something to do with the fact that Ford is now selling a Spirit of America version of the 815 hp Mustang GTD, which lists for more than $400,000, but isn’t specifically tied to the sesquicentennial.
