Tesla’s all-time production surpassed 9 million vehicles today as a white Model Y rolled off of the assembly line at its Shanghai, China, factory.

The milestone comes just months after it hit 8 million in June, when its Berlin, Germany, factory cranked out a red Model Y that hit the milestone.

Tesla started building vehicles in 2008 and and first reached one million in 2020 with yet another Model Y at its Fremont, Calif., plant.

Tesla today builds its consumer vehicles at the three locations and its Austin, Texas, headquarters, while pilot production of the Semi is underway at its Sparks, Nev., facility.

The Model Y was one of the three best-selling vehicles in the world in 2024 with over one million deliveries, although reports differ on the order. The Model Y and Toyota Rav4 each came out on top in separate studies and it was almost too close to call.

Toyota delivered more than 10 million vehicles total, however, which puts Tesla’s achievement in perspective. Nevertheless, its nine million tally is more than several notable legacy brands have achieved, including Porsche and Land Rover.

Tesla doesn’t appear to be expecting big sales growth in 2026, but is scheduled to add its new Cybercab to the lineup in April. The two-seat model will initially be used as a company-owned vehicle in Tesla’s Robotaxi ride-hailing service, but will later be sold to consumers who will be able to offer them as taxis through the scheme.

Tesla will also be unveiling the production version of its long-gestating second generation Roadster sports car on April 1, but it isn’t set to enter production before 2027 at the earliest, a full decade since the original prototype was unveiled.
