Most horses whinny, but Ford’s next pony car whines.

Ford is teasing the January 15 reveal of a new Mustang Dark Horse model on social media with an audio track that leaves no doubt about what to expect.

The automaker is holding its Ford Racing season kick-off event in Detroit on Thursday night, where it will celebrate its return to Formula 1 with the Red Bull and Racing Bulls teams and unveil the new model.

“The most advanced, powerful and track capable Dark Horse ever,” is all the Instagram story says as images of the Dark Horse logo dance on the screen and an engine with the distinctive whine of a supercharger revs. It then starts to scream, as if the car is accelerating down a long straight.

The current $66,000 Mustang Dark Horse is powered by a 500 hp version of the Coyote 5.0-liter V8, making it the most powerful mainstream model, while the $327,000 Mustang GTD features an 815 hp supercharged 5.2-liter V8.

It’s hard to tell from the sound if the Dark Horse is stepping up to the larger displacement engine, a previous version of which was in the last Shelby GT500 with 760 hp.

The 5.0-liter has plenty of potential itself and the Ford Racing parts catalog offers a $10,500 supercharger that cranks it up to 810 hp.

“Track-capable” isn’t all about power, however, so you can be sure the car will have plenty of handling upgrades to go with the new motor.

UPDATE: Red Bull has released a YouTube video featuring Red Bull Formula 1 drivers Max Verstappen and Arvid Lindblad racing a variety of Ford performance cars from its history including the 2026 Dark Horse SC. The video doesn’t reveal any details about the car, but Verstappen used it to beat Lindblad driving 1966 GT40 over a short cornering course.

The Ford Racing Season Launch will be livestreamed on YouTube starting at 7 p.m. ET on January 15.
