General Motors Is Recalling 36 Models For One Of The Oddest Modern Problems Yet

Chevrolet Silverado

The paperless society first envisioned decades ago has yet to materialize, but General Motors is doing its part.

The automaker has been transitioning from providing thick physical owner’s manuals stored in the glove compartment to digital versions that are loaded into the vehicle infotainment system.

The digital manuals are just as comprehensive and arguably easier to use, as they offer a search function, but that’s only true if you can access them. Unfortunately, that’s not the case for a batch of vehicles that left the factory without the manuals included and are now subject to a safety recall.

“The radio may not have been set to the correct status to download the electronic owner’s manual during production,” the recall notice said.

According to the recall report, the action covers certain examples of the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt EV, 2025-2026 Cadillac OPTIQ, Chevrolet Colorado, Equinox EV, GMC Canyon, 2026 Buick Enclave, Envision, Cadillac CT5, Escalade, Escalade ESV, Escalade IQ, Escalade IQL, LYRIQ, VISTIQ, Chevrolet Blazer EV, Corvette Convertible, Corvette Coupe, Corvette Convertible E-Ray, Equinox, Silverado 1500, 2500, 3500, Silverado EV, Suburban 1500, Tahoe, Traverse, GMC Acadia, Hummer EV Pickup, Hummer EV SUV, Sierra 1500, 2500, 3500, Sierra EV, Terrain, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles.

That sounds like a lot, but the total number of affected vehicles is just 5,482 spread out across those 36 models. In the case of the Chevrolet Equinox EV, there is only one vehicle that needs to be recalled, while twice that many Silverado 3500s must make a trip to a dealer to have their radios reset to accept the download.

The issue was discovered internally and GM said it hasn’t received any complaints from customers. Notices are scheduled to be sent out on April 13, but owners may contact GM customer service at 1-866-467-9700, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or Cadillac customer service at 1-800-333-4223 now for more information.
