GM’s Factory Zero Is Building 0 Electric Trucks Right Now

Factory Zero

General Motors has idled its Factory Zero electric truck plant due to low demand for the full-size pickups and SUVs. The company temporarily laid off 1,300 workers on March 16 and they aren’t scheduled to return until April 13.

“Factory Zero will temporarily adjust production to align EV production with market demand,” the automaker told Reuters.

The assembly plant builds the Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, GMC Hummer EV Pickup/SUV, and Cadillac Escalade IQ. Despite receiving many accolades, including the Escalade IQ being named US-Built SUV and Luxury Vehicle Of The Year GM sold 8,385 of the trucks combined in the fourth quarter of 2025. First quarter 2026 sales will be reported later this week.

GM last year scrapped plans to convert a second factory to electric truck production and this week extended the work week at the Flint Assembly plant, where it builds internal combustion engine trucks, from five to six days.

GM’s electric truck cutbacks follow Ford’s cancellation of the all-electric F-150 Lightning and Ram’s decision to not launch an all-electric version of the Ram 1500.

Ford and Ram are both working on range-extended electric vehicle versions of the trucks, which incorporate a gas engine that works as a generator.

GM was one of the pioneers of range-extended electric vehicles with the Chevrolet Volt, but has not announced plans for a truck that uses the technology.

Meanwhile, production of the once-beleaguered Tesla Cybertruck continues following the introduction of a new $72,235 entry-level model.
