6 American Cars And Trucks That Came Back From The Dead
Volkswagen is bringing back the Scout truck brand after more than four decades.
The International Scout was originally built from 1961 through 1980 before production ended for what seemed like forever.
It’s being resurrected as a lineup of electric off-road SUVs and pickups that will be launching in 2026, but it’s far from the first car or truck model that’s made a comeback years after being discontinued.
CHEVROLET CAMARO
Two left, one came back. Chevrolet and Pontiac discontinued the Camaro and Firebird in 2002, but the Bowtie Brand brought back the Camaro in 2010. Unfortunately for fans, the Camaro went out of production again in December of 2023 and Chevrolet isn’t replacing it anytime soon.

DODGE CHARGER
Dodge’s first muscle car model was first sold through four generations from 1966 until 1978 and the Charger name was brought back as a front-wheel-drive compact from 1982 to 1987. In 2006, Dodge committed what many considered blasphemy by resurrecting it as a four-door sedan, but was a hit that lasted until 2023. Now it’s set to be replaced by the upcoming electric Dodge Charger Daytona and inline-six-cylinder-powered Dodge Charger, which will cover all the bases by offering two and four door models.

DODGE CHALLENGER
The Challenger followed the Charger out of retirement in 2008 and was built alongside it until 2023. The V8-powered coupe was a reboot of the first generation Challenger from 1970 to 1974 rather than the four-cylinder Mitsubishi-based car that wore the name from 1978 to 1983. Dodge won’t be bringing back the name a third time and will let the two-door versions of the Charger Daytona and Charger help fill its slot in the lineup.

FORD BRONCO
The Ford Bronco’s first run lasted 30 years from 1966 to 1996 when the model drove off into the wilderness, but Ford brought it back in 2021 as a thoroughly modern truck with styling inspired by the original.
HUMMER
When General Motors decided to get serious about building electric vehicles it did it in a big way. The 2021 Hummer EV brought back an entire brand — this time under the GMC banner — that had been put on the shelf in 2010 and reimagined its notorious gas-guzzling trucks as zero-emissions off-roaders.
PONTIAC GTO
The 1964 Pontiac GTO is considered the first muscle car and was built until 1974 as that era came to an end. It returned in 2004 as a rebadged version of a car from GM’s Holden brand in Australia, but even a 350 hp V8 that was swapped for a 400 hp the following year to wasn’t enough to keep it alive and it died in 2006 with the entire Pontiac brand following it into the automotive afterlife in 2010 … at least for now.
