Ford is keeping the Warthog on a tight leash.

The automaker in 2020 filed for a trademark on the Warthog name covering motor vehicles including SUVs, which kicked off speculation that a hardcore Bronco model that would use it was in the works.

Along with the animal, Warthog is also the nickname of the A-10 attack aircraft and the name of a futuristic off-road vehicle featured in the Halo videogame series.

That vehicle turned out to be the Bronco Raptor, but there was a Warthog connection.

The Bronco Raptor’s chief engineer told Ford Authority that Warthog was the codename for the project, which ended up borrowing the Raptor name from the high performance F-150.

But Ford appears to have an affinity for the Warthog name.

The trademark application remains live and a fifth extension to file a Statement of Use on it was granted in October.

Ford isn’t known to be working on any new models that might be pegged to the Warthog name, but you never know what’s in development.
