The Tesla Model Y Was The World’s Best-Selling Car In 2023 With 1.2 Million Delivered
The Tesla Model Y has hit the top.
Tesla said during its 2023 earnings call that it sold approximately 1.2 million Model Y SUVs around the globe in 2023, which made it the world’s best-selling model.
The Toyota Corolla has been the best-seller for years. Toyota hasn’t announced its 2023 total yet, but it sold 1.12 million in 2022.
The Corolla’s figure includes several vehicles that are sold under the Corolla name, while the Model Y is a single model with different powertrain options.

The Model Y was the fourth best seller in 2022, behind the Corolla, Toyota Rav4 and Ford F-Series. Ford hasn’t released last year’s global sales for the F-Series, but it built 920,000 F-150 and F-Series Super Duty trucks.

Tesla builds the Model Y in four plants around the world. There are two in the U.S., one in Germany and one in China. Tesla’s total deliveries last year were 1,739,707 with 68,874 comprised of the Model S/X and Cybertruck and the rest attributed to the Model 3.
Tesla did not say how many Cybertrucks have been built since the first deliveries were made on November 28, but it is continuing to increase production and is essentially sold out for 2024. Elon Musk said that he expects sales to reach 250,000 annually in North American when production reaches full capacity.

Tesla’s next volume model could be arriving as early as late next year, Musk said. The Next Generation Platform, which is being developed to deliver a $25,000 model, will first be built at Tesla’s Austin, Tex., factory before production is added at a new facility planned for Mexico and a third outside of North America, which might be announced this year.

Musk said the assembly line for the Next Generation Platform is being designed with next-level technology and that he and the engineers working on it will be sleeping on the line in Austin to get it up and running.
