A recent photo posted anonymously to Imgur has been making the rounds on social media that shows a heavily camouflaged sporty four-door being tested on a public highway.
The vehicle is wearing manufacturer license plates and a “test vehicle” sticker, in case that wasn’t obvious.
We’ve run it through an AI detector, which said it’s the real deal, but haven’t yet been able to confirm its origin or authenticity. The plate design doesn’t quite match up with any that we are aware of, however, so we’re suspicious. The question is: If it’s real, what is it?
We know Chevrolet is working on a four-door Camaro, but hear that it will have hidden rear door handles, which the prototype does not. The exposed taillights look more like something from Dodge, but the car’s proportions and details suggest it is not just an updated version of the current Charger, and the brand hasn’t announced plans for any new four-door car models.
Ford is reportedly working on a four-door Mustang, but Mustang tri-bar taillights are very distinctive and the model is still several years away from production, if it makes it, while this prototype looks nearly complete. The fact that the manufacturer license plate is from Illinois adds a layer to the mystery, as prototypes from the Detroit automakers usually, though not always, wear Michigan plates.
It could also be something from a foreign brand, but the styling cues look very American. While there is also a next-generation Cadillac CT5 in the works, and possibly a new Buick sedan, we understand that it isn’t either of those.
