Electric NASCAR Demo Debut Delayed By Rain

NASCAR’s first electric car won’t be striking Los Angeles, but lightning might.

NASCAR decided to move Sunday’s Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum to Saturday night due to torrential rain that’s expected to inundate Southern California on Sunday and into next week.

NASCAR has built an electric concept car that it was planning to bring out during the Clash on Sunday, but Fox Sports reporter Bob Pockrass reports that it will not be making an appearance on Saturday.

A new date for its debut has not been announced.

The Coliseum track was a perfect venue for the vehicle, which is best suited for short tracks where it can use brake regeneration to recharge its battery and extend its range.

NASCAR’s next events are the week of the Daytona 500 on Feb. 18 at the Daytona International Speedway, which is a 2.5-mile superspeedway that might not be an ideal venue for showcasing the vehicle.

However, Daytona is being followed by Atlanta Motor Speedway this year, and while the main oval track is a 1.5-mile oval, it has a quarter-mile track in front of the grandstands just like the Clash track.

NASCAR hasn’t released many details on the car, but it is based on the Next Gen Cup Series chassis and leaked photos show that it has the body of an SUV.

It was also able to do laps at Martinsville Speedway within a few tenths of a second of the Cup Series cars.
