Lexus And Toyota Beat Buick In 2024 J.D. Power Dependability Study While EVs Falter

Buick was the highest-ranked U.S. brand on the 2024 J.D. Power U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study in third, but Toyota took the top two spots.

Toyota and its luxury brand Lexus finished second and first and all three were ahead of the pack.

Lexus was rated at 135 problems per 100 vehicles, Toyota at 147 and Buick at 149 as fourth-place Chevrolet racked up 174.

The industry average was 190, which is up from 186 last year.

The survey breaks down climate control; driving assistance; driving experience; exterior; features/controls/displays; infotainment; interior; powertrain; and seats into 184 problem areas and it’s not just if they work or not, but if the owner likes how they do their job over three years of ownership.

Infotainment systems and driver assistance systems are largely to blame for recent overall increases in problems, with drivers reporting being annoyed by many of them. Electric vehicles, which are typically packed with both types of features, were the worst with 256 problems compared to 187 for pure internal combustion vehicles. Plug-in hybrids and hybrids fell between the two with scores of 216 and 191, respectively.

Chrysler, which has only sold the Pacifica minivan and 300 sedan in recent years, was last on the list with 310 problems and followed by Audi (275), Land Rover (268), Volkswagen (267) and Tesla (252).

Tesla is included on the list but with an asterisk as the company doesn’t allow access to owner information in a few states where permission is required.

The U.S. made Ford Super Duty and Toyota Tundra won the large heavy duty and light duty pickup categories, while the Tacoma was the top midsize pickup and the Kia Sedona the number one minivan.
