The Honda CR-V e:FCEV is a hydrogen fuel cell-powered version of the popular compact SUV that will be available in California starting on July 9.

Along with the fuel cell, the model also has a 17.7 kWh plug-in battery pack that’s good for 29 miles of range.

The vehicle’s unusual powertrain is being installed at the Honda Performance Manufacturing center in Ohio that used to build the Acura NSX supercar.

Honda has now announced pricing for the model.

The CR-V e:FCEV will only be offered through leases priced at $389 per month for three years with $2,959 due at signing and 36,000 miles; $389 with $2,889 for six years and 72,000 miles; and $489 with $2,989 for two years and 60,000 miles.

The big extra is that the prices include credits for hydrogen fuel. $15,000 on the three-year plan, $30,000 on the six-year plan and $25,000 on the two-year plan.

The CR-V e:FCEV can hold 4.3 kilograms of hydrogen in two tanks, which has roughly the equivalent energy of 4.3 gallons of gasoline. Its EPA efficiency rating is equivalent to 61 mpg city, 52 mpg highway and 57 mpg combined.

Hydrogen is a lot pricier than gasoline, however, and currently lists for $36 in California, where there are 54 public stations statewide. At that cost, the $15,000 credit is good for about 96 fill-ups and 25,000 miles of driving. That is not factoring in the 29 miles of all-electric driving available if the vehicle starts each day with a full charge.

The lease also includes 21 rental day credits with Avis for owners who would like to use a different vehicle for long trips outside of the reach of the hydrogen refueling infrastructure.

THE HONDA PRELUDE AND POP-UP HEADLIGHTS ARE BACK

Honda said the lease price is based on a retail price of $50,000, but it has no immediate plans to offer the CR-V e:FCEV for sale or for lease outside of California.
