What Is The Ford Maverick Thunder?

The Ford Maverick Lobo may be on the loose, but what happened to the Thunder?

The Maverick Lobo is an upcoming performance version of the compact pickup that has an upgraded all-wheel-drives system and a Lobo Drive Mode that sets it up for autocross and track driving.

But a year before Ford filed to trademark the Maverick Lobo name on Aug 14, 2023, along with one for the F-150 Lobo, it applied to protect the Maverick Thunder name, which hasn’t been used yet in the U.S.

The July 27, 2022 submission was accompanied by similar applications for Ranger Thunder and F-150 Thunder. It had previously applied for just the Thunder name in 2018.

Ford also filed for the three model names in Canada and Australia in 2022, but it doesn’t currently sell the Maverick Down Under, Thunder or otherwise.

However, it did offer a limited edition Ranger Thunder in Europe in 2020. It was an appearance package that included a sport bar, graphics and unique wheels. Just 4,500 were built. The styling isn’t typical for trucks sold in the U.S., but Ford could repurpose the name with a different look.

And while an F-150 Thunder would make a nice pairing with the F-150 Lightning, electric vehicles don’t make much noise. The name would be better suited for a V8-powered truck Ford also isn’t launching any all-electric versions of the Ranger or Maverick anytime soon, so an EV application wouldn’t work across the lineup. Instead, the F-150 Lightning Flash is a new addition to the lineup this year.

Maverick Lobo deliveries are scheduled to begin early next year at prices ranging from $36,595 to $42,090 with a standard 238 hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, but the order books for it and the rest of the updated 2025 Maverick lineup is already opened.
