Plymouth is making a shocking return!
Mopar has restored a 1967 Plymouth GTX and retrofitted it with an all-electric drivetrain and will be displaying it on its stand at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas.
Plymouth swapped out the V8 for an electric motor that uses technology from the upcoming Dodge Charger Daytona, but in a different way.
The motor, which has an integrated dual-charging module on top of it with a cover designed to look like a Hellcat V8’s supercharger, is installed longitudinally and sends its power through a driveshaft to a solid live rear axle.

It hangs from aluminum mounts in an engine bay that’s been fitted carbon fiber closeout panels and draws its electricity from a 73 kilowatt-hour battery that’s split between the engine bay and a cage that’s mounted in the trunk. Mopar doesn’t have any performance figures, but says it should be good for around 250 miles of driving between charges.

It rides on a coilover suspension system and 18-by-9-inch BTG wheels with Pirelli P-Zero tires and has a set of modern Wilwood brakes. The exterior has been updated with body-color bumpers, a chin splitter and a carbon fiber vented hood.

A blue, black and bronze color scheme carries over to the interior where modified Jeep Wrangler seats and, heritage-inspired flat-bottom steering wheel and retro-style modern gauges highlight a cabin that stays true to the original style.

The single speed transmission is controlled through a rotary transmission selector borrowed from the Dodge Durango that’s mounted in a center console equipped with the cupholders from a Jeep Grand Cherokee and an armrest, two features the original GTX was lacking.
Mopar hasn’t announced plans to put the powertrain into production, but is considering it and will be looking for feedback. It said the system is scalable for different power outputs and battery capacities.

General Motors offers a similar motor that works with a four-speed transmission and there are various aftermarket companies that sell electric conversion kits for classic cars.
The two-door Charger Daytona should be on sale long before Mopar offers anything like this, as it is expected to be in showrooms before the end of this year. The initial models will be a 496 hp R/T that starts at $61,590 and a 670 hp Scat Pack priced at $75,185. Four-doors will follow early next year before the internal combustion engine Charger version debuts late next year with the choice of either a 420 hp or 550 hp turbocharged. 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder engine.
