Richard Petty’s 2009 ‘Plymouth Superbird’ Prototype Is For Sale

Plymouth went out of business in 2001, but it was resurrected a decade later by Richard Petty. Well, sort of.
The NASCAR legend’s now-shuttered Petty’s Garage custom car and speed shop collaborated with Heide Performance Products (HPP) to turn the third generation Dodge Challenger into modern versions of the Dodge Daytona and Plymouth Superbird.
Petty drove the original aerodynamically designed Superbird to eight wins in 1970, the only season it competed in the Cup Series, before new regulations took away its advantage.
Nevertheless, it became one of his most iconic cars and the one used for his character, The King, in the animated film “Cars.”

Petty’s Garage offered just 25 cars, but one of the prototypes that was sold has been put up for auction on Bring A Trailer.

The orange and black coupe is based on a 2009 Challenger SRT8 and features a nosecone with hidden headlights and a rear wing high enough to clear the trunk opening.

The 5.7-liter V8 has been upgraded with Magnuson supercharger that breathes through a hood scoop and power is sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission.

The interior features custom ribbed leather upholstery with an orange gradient pattern, body colored trim inserts and a pistol grip shifter.

The odometer reads 30,566 and the car was last sold in 2020 on the platform for $44,250, so there’s a reference point for what it might be valued at today. The auction is scheduled to run through Aug. 28 at 3:19 p.m. ET.
