NASCAR will be implementing a new artificial intelligence officiating aid at the Circuit of the Americas weekend to make sure cars are staying within the track limits.
While the cars are allowed to drive outside of the lines in much of the road course, their lines are restricted in several sections. Last year, NASCAR focused on the turn 3,4 and 5 esses, but will also be enforcing limits in turns 6 and 19 this year.
Along with tire packs positioned to discourage drivers from cutting it close, NASCAR will be using AI-powered cameras to monitor the cars, which will alert officials if there is even a small infringement, which can then be reviewed using video replay before a penalty is issued.
NASCAR isn’t the only series launching this sort of technology this season. Formula 1 will also be using it and far more extensively.

Motorsport reports that Formula 1’s system will be monitoring every corner at every track and not just with cameras. It also includes a hyper accurate positioning system that can be cross-referenced to determine if a car has cross the line. It also allows race control to send video evidence of any infractions to the teams to save time from appeals.
