Layne Riggs Wins NASCAR Truck Series St. Petersburg Race On Fumes

The NASCAR Truck Series at St. Petersburg

Take anything Layne Riggs says with a grain of salt from now on.

The Front Row Motorsports driver said before the first-ever NASCAR Truck Series race on the streets of St. Petersburg that he wasn’t much of a road course driver. After the race, his competitors should be very afraid.

Riggs drove from a 28th place starting position to the front by the end of stage 2 and on to victory.

It wasn’t easy. Ben Rhodes and Ty Majeski, who both also led laps, caught up to him with four to go and traffic in front of them. Riggs held on, but started weaving on the final lap searching for the last drops of fuel in his Ford F-150’s tank.

He found enough to hold them off and take the win and after the race said the engine had been sputtering for the last eight laps.

Making the win even more impressive was the stacked field of road course aces Riggs beat, including Gio Ruggierio, Connor Mossack, Colin Braunn, James Hinchcliffe, Adam Andretti and four-time IndyCar champion Dario Franchitti.

The Truck Series takes the next two weeks off and regroups at Darlington Raceway on Friday, March 20.
