Alex Bowman will sit out a second consecutive NASCAR Cup Series race as he continues to suffer from a bout of vertigo.
Bowman began experiencing symptoms during the race at the Circuit of the Americas and had to drop out and be replaced in the middle of the race. He skipped the race at Phoenix Raceway, where Anthony Alfredo filled in driving the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports car.
Bowman has now elected not to drive at Las Vegas and will be replaced by JR Motorsports O’Reilly Auto Parts Series Driver Justin Allgaier, who won the NOAPS race at the track last March and is currently leading the series in points.
“Alex continues to work closely with doctors toward being medically cleared, but he’s still experiencing some lingering symptoms,” said Jeff Andrews, president and general manager of Hendrick Motorsports. “He’s put a lot into the recovery process, and we will continue to support him every step of the way. Our priority remains making sure Alex is fully ready before returning to the race car.”
Bowman has finishes of 40th at Daytona, 23rd at Atlanta and 36th at COTA — where he earned points for starting the race — and is currently 36th in the season points standings. If he finishes the regular season in the top 16, he will require a medical waiver for missing races to compete for the title during the Chase postseason.
