The Freedom 250 Grand Prix will be living up to its name.
IndyCar has announced that it is extending the planned race distance from 125 laps to 147 laps around the 1.7-mile street circuit, which brings its length up to 250 miles. Along with the symbolism, the added length will will require an additional pitstop.
“The additional laps will create even more opportunities for strategy, on-track action and late-race drama while giving our fans extra value and even more opportunities to enjoy this historic event.”
The seven-turn track crisscrosses the National Mall near the U.S. Capitol building and includes a .4-mile straight along Pennsylvania Avenue.
100,000 free general admission tickets were distributed through a lottery and additional fan zones will be accessible during the Aug 22-23 race weekend, which will include an The International Race of Champions (IROC) exhibition race featuring vintage IROC cars.
The featured race is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, Aug. 23 and will be broadcast live on Fox.
