Brad Keselowski will retain his minority ownership in RFK Racing, but is free to drive for another team, the organization confirmed on Saturday.

“Moving forward, Brad will be a passive investor of RFK Racing, thus concluding his role in governance, competition oversight and board participation,” the team said in a statement that also wished him “the best of luck with the remainder of his racing career.”

Keselowski owns 20% of the team and hoped to continue driving for it past the end of this season, but the rest of the owners wanted him to transition into a full-time competition leadership role as his current driving contract came to an end. The parties announced in September that he would be leaving as a driver, but the matter of his ownership stake had not been sorted out. Keselowski said he recently tried to buy a controlling interest in the team, but was rebuffed.

The 42-year-old Keselowski held a press conference at Martinsville Speedway on Saturday to discuss the issue. He said he intended RFK Racing to be his “forever home” when he moved there in 2022, but that it didn’t work out. He said the negotiations were not adversarial, but that he and his partners reached a “strong impasse” during negotiations.

Keselowski said he has several opportunities to drive in the Cup Series for “2027 and beyond,” but has not yet finalized a deal. He is free to drive for any team or manufacturer. He said that he intends to eventually sell his equity in RFK Racing to permanently cut ties.
