The Cyberster Is About To Steal Tesla’s Electric Thunder

If you combined a Tesla Cybertruck and Roadster, it probably wouldn’t look like MG’s latest model, but it might sound like it.

The classic British brand, which is now owned by China’s SAIC Motor, is about to launch an all-electric convertible with a somewhat familiar name.

It’s called the Cyberster, which sure sounds like a portmanteau of Cybertruck and Roadster, and it will soon be filling a gap left by the latter.

Tesla unveiled the latest Roadster concept in 2017 and has even taken $250,000 reservations of the vehicle, but it has yet to bring it to market and still lists it as “in development” on its company reports.

Elon Musk hasn’t even offered any of his typically optimistic estimates for when it might go on sale.

On the other hand, MG says the Cyberster will be available in the U.K. this summer and it is expected to be priced around £50,000 or $65,000.

Preliminary specifications suggest it will come with a 300 hp rear-wheel-drivetrain and that a 536 hp all-wheel-drive version that can sprint to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds will also be offered.

THE USA NEEDS MORE AMERICAN SUPERCARS

The range is estimated at 360 miles per charge, but that’s on the Chinese rating system which is more optimistic than the EPAs. There isn’t a direct conversion, but you can figure closer to 275 miles.

There are no current plans for MG to return to the U.S. market, however, so the Tesla Roadster will have it all to itself.

Nevertheless, no one has gone to the trouble of trademarking the Cyberster name.
