The Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are plugging in.

Jeep CEO Antonio Filosa has confirmed that plug-in hybrid versions of the full-size SUVs are on the way.

The original Jeep Wagoneer concept revealed in 2020 was presented as a plug-in hybrid, but without any technical details.

The production vehicles launched with V8 engines, but they have now been replaced by the more powerful ‘Hurricane’ 3.0-liter turbocharged V6.

According to Filosa, the plug-in hybrid will be based on the upcoming Ram 1500 Ramcharger’s powertain. The Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are built on a modified version of the Ram 1500 platform, so this isn’t that big of a surprise.

But instead of a typical parallel hybrid that allows the electric motor or internal combustion engine to directly drive the wheels independently or in concert, as is the case with the Jeep Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe, the Ramcharger’s powertrain is a series hybrid. Ram and Jeep refer to this setup as a range-extended electric vehicle.

This means that the electric motors provide all of the drive power while a 3.6-liter V6 is carried onboard to function as a generator for long trips. In the case of the Ram 1500 Ramcharger, it has a powertrain rated at a maximum output of 663 horsepower and 614 lb-ft of torque.

The 70.8 kWh battery pack is good for approximately 145 miles of range, but with a 27 gallon fuel tank, the V6 can extend that to 690 miles until you need to stop to charge or fill up again.

Jeep hasn’t revealed the exact specifications for the plug-in Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, but they are scheduled to go on sale next year. Before that, the all-electric Wagoneer S that Filosa was in New York to reveal will be on sale with a 300-mile range and a 600 hp all-wheel-drive system that can accelerate it to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds.

The Wagoneer S Launch Edition is priced at $71,995, but lower priced trims will be added to the lineup next year.
