The Toyota Rav4 Beat The Ford F-150 As The USA’s Best Selling Vehicle In 2024
The reign is over … again.
The Toyota Rav4 is the new king of the hill in U.S. auto sales after toppling Ford F-150 from its throne in 2024.
Toyota sold 475,193 Rav4s while Ford sold 460,915 F-150s, according to the data crunchers at Jato Dynamics.
It marks the first time since 2009 that the F-150 wasn’t on the top step of the podium. That year, the Toyota Camry was number one during a dip in the truck and SUV segments driven by the lingering effects of the Great Recession, 2008’s gas price spike and the Obama administration’s push for efficiency, which included the Cash for Clunkers program. Toyota sold 356,824 Camrys and Ford just 306,461 F-150s.

As things normalized, the F-150 was back on top and SUVs would soon take over the broader market from cars. The Rav4 passed the Camry in 2017 as both Toyota’s best seller and the best selling vehicle that wasn’t a pickup.
Ford does still lay claim to the best selling truck and vehicle titles, but uses the full F-Series lineup to do so, which includes both its light and Super Duty trucks and extends to the F-600. It doesn’t publicly report F-150 sales independent of the others.

Chevrolet also counts its light and heavy duty Silverados to take second place on the overall list, but when JATO Dynamics breaks out the Silverado 1500 it is fifth with 344,022 sales behind the Honda CR-V (402,791) and Tesla Model Y (372,613.) The Camry remains the best selling car model in sixth, ahead of the Toyota Corolla, Nissan Rogue, Honda Civic and GMC Sierra 1500.
You’ll often hear General Motors boast that it is number one in trucks, because it adds Chevy and GMC sales. When you do that with the Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500, which are mechanical twins and built in the same factories, GM ends up with a total of 560,270, which would beat the Rav4 and F-150.

The only question now is what was the world’s best seller last year. According to JATO Dyamics, the Tesla Model Y beat the Rav4 in 2023 1.22 million to 1.075 million, but Tesla sales were down last year. Like the American brands with their trucks, Tesla doesn’t break out the Model Y’s specific sales in its official sales reports, instead bundling it with the Model 3’s.
A separate tally from Focus2Move put the Model Y’s 2024 sales at 1.09 million followed by the Corolla at 1.8 million and the Rav4 at 1.02 million, but its numbers often differ from those of JATO Dynamics.
