Scott McLaughlin set the fastest Indy 500 pole time in history last year in his Team Penske Chevrolet with a 234.220 mph speed, which means he was just fast enough to stay in front of this year’s pace car.

The Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 will be leading the field for the 108th running of the Indy 500 on May 25. The 1,064 hp model has a confirmed top speed of 233 mph.

It won’t be able to hit that on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, but GM President Mark Reuss did drive it that fast on a high speed oval test track in Germany last year.

“Chevrolet is proud that the 2025 Corvette ZR1, our fastest Corvette ever, will be the Official Pace Car for the 109th Running of the Indianapolis 500,” Scott Bell, global Chevrolet vice president, said in a news release. “With a top speed of 233 mph, the Corvette ZR1 is the perfect fit to lead the Indy 500 field to green.”

The Corvette ZR1 has a starting price of $174,995 and deliveries are expected to begin in the coming weeks. New York Giants great and Fox Sports personality Michael Strahan will drive it at the beginning of the race while IndyCar veteran Sarah Fisher will take over duties during caution periods. Corvettes have served as the Indy 500 pace car every year since 2017, with the hybrid Corvette E-Ray given the honor last year.

Along with the Corvette ZR1, Chevrolet is also providing a fleet of Corvette Stingrays and Silverado 1500 RST pickups to serve as “Festival Event Cars” that will shuttle VIPs and help promote the event around Indianapolis during the month of May in the lead-up to the race. The festival cars are distributed to dealers and put up for sale following the event while the pace car is typically donated to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway museum.
