IndyCar’s future has been secured with new commitments from its engine suppliers, Honda and Chevrolet.
The automakers’ current contract with the series was set to expire at the end of this season, just two years before all-new cars and engines are scheduled to debut.
The new multi-year deal runs beyond the 2028 launch of the new cars and comes with a bonus for the brands. Each is being given a team charter that guarantees a spot in every race, which they can use to enter their own car or sell to another team.
IndyCar kicked off the program last year by issuing 25 charters to its top full-time that are good for every race except for the Indy 500, which still requires every car to qualify for a starting spot. Honda has already committed to a factory entry for 2028.
“This is a monumental day for INDYCAR, fueled by a massive and historic commitment from two of our best and most trusted partners,” IndyCar President J. Douglas Boles said in a news release. “Chevrolet and Honda have worked tirelessly with us over the last 12 months to get to this point, and both have made it very clear that they are fully committed to this sport and invested in continuing the positive momentum the series generated in 2025.”
The debut of the new car has been delayed several years, which created much uncertainty as 2027 was not covered under by the last agreement with the automakers. The new power units are being developed as hybrids with turbocharged 2.4-liter V6 engines and will be more powerful than today’s 2.2-liter V6-based units. The cars will continue to use a spec chassis being designed by Dallara.
