Ford Mustang Mach-E buyers who want a frunk for their junk are going to have to shell out a chunk of bucks.
Ford Authority reports that the Mustang Mach-E’s frunk front cargo space is now a $495 option for 2026.
The electric SUV launched in 2021 with a 4.7-cubic-foot frunk under the hood that it once comically (with or without intent) demonstrated with photos of one filled with ice and shrimp cocktail as Ford staffers snacked and another with buffalo wings.
However, Ford added something else to the Mustang Mach-E in 2025 and shrunk the frunk. The vehicle was reengineered with an efficient heat pump system for the climate control that helps stretch the battery capacity in winter.

The frunk insert was redesigned with a shallower floor and a tall intrusion in one corner, reducing its total capacity to 2.6 cubic-feet. That’s still larger than the frunks in some other vehicles, but makes it less suitable for large items and luggage.

Plastic isn’t free, however, and with the Mexican-made Mustang Mach-E now subject to new tariffs on imported vehicles, removing it as a standard feature helps to reduce base manufacturing costs. Ford isn’t the only company making this kind of move.
The Cadillac Lyriq doesn’t have a frunk, but when it was first launched for 2023 it had a vanity panel under the hood to cover up the electrical bits. Today, it only comes on the top-of-the-line Lyriq-V.

And while Ford has discontinued the F-150 Lightning, which had an enormous 14.1-cubic-foot frunk, it does have good news for fans of the feature. The automaker has announced that its upcoming $30,000 electric pickup, built on its new Universal Electric Vehicle platform, will have both a frunk and a lockable cover for the bed, although it hasn’t yet confirmed if they will be standard or optional.
