It’s Heim time again!
Defending NASCAR Truck Series champion Corey Heim picked up the first win of the season at Darlington Raceway on Friday night in an overtime finish.
Heim is running a part-time schedule this year for Tricon Garage while he gets some starts in the O’Reily Auto Parts Series and Cup Series as he begins to move up the NASCAR ladder.
Carson Hocevar took the lead after a restart with 20 laps to go and was cruising toward a win ahead of Ross Chastain when his right front tire went down and put him into the wall four laps from the finish.
That left Chastain in front for the first overtime restart next to pole-sitter Kaden Honeycutt. Chastain quickly stretched his lead, but Tyler Ankrum lost a tire in Turn 1 to bring out the yellow and push the race into a second overtime.
Chastain got off well again with a strong push from behind and led the first lap, but then Corey Heim came out of nowhere after taking the restart from ninth on fresher tires than the trucks in front of him and made it by Chastain in Turns 3 and 4 to steal the win.
“We had the set of scuffs laying and they were five laps fresher than everyone else’s, I was like, ‘it’s worth a shot, I don’t think we can win from where we’re at, you know, and, damn, sure enough, I just feel like I made all the right moves, made it three wide into three coming to the white and bombed it off in there on Ross,” Heim said on the front stretch after the race.
