The Hummer X Concept Is A Wrangler-Size Electric Off-Roader

General Motors has announced the opening of its new Advanced Design Pasadena Studio with the big unveiling of two small Hummer EV concepts.

The Hummer X SUV is roughly the size of a Jeep Wrangler or Ford Bronco and designed with the same sort of extreme off-road capability, while the Hummer X pickup adds a bed to the idea.

GMC made it clear that they are not production intent vehicles, but are testbeds for new production methods and design directions and a vision at “what could be.”

The SUV rides on 37-inch tires with a rock crawling tread, high performance Mutlimatic DSSV shock absorbers like the ones found on the Canyon AT4X and has 13.2 inches of ground clearance. The fender flares are removable and the underbody fully protected with armor.

It’s also designed with easily body panels attached by fasteners and built with a Flex Fab on-demand metal manufacturing process, which can be used to create and produce different designs using the same machines, rather than relying on traditional stamping. GMC suggests owners could design and share custom bodywork that could be built using the system and easily swap the parts themselves.

The pickup adds 14 inches to the wheelbase and 19 inches overall and is shorter in length than a Canyon. It is outfitted with 35-inch street tires, but has the same high-clearance design as the SUV.

Neither GMC nor Chevrolet currently offer a midsize off-road SUV that could compete against the Wrangler or Bronco and the last was the Hummer H3 of 2010. The full-size Hummer EV and Hummer EV Pickup combined for 15,788 sales last year.
