Ford has come up with a new way to ferry your furry friends around. The automaker has filed a patent application for a pickup bed kennel.
Bed kennels are a popular aftermarket accessory, but are typically large, heavy boxes that have to be removed to free up cargo space. Ford’s solution looks to make this transition much easier.
The simple device is depicted in sketches installed in what appears to be a Maverick and is comprised of just two lightweight plastic components.
There’s a gate with a built-in door that mounts vertically in the bed and is shaped to fit over the wheel wells, along with an extendable roof section that is secured to the top of it, which closes off the space to the cabin wall.

Disassembled, the gate can be repositioned closer to the bed and the roof can be collapsed, allowing it to be stored vertically between the wheel wells and behind the gate.

The design could be scaled to fit a variety of bed sizes for Ford’s various trucks, including the F-Series and upcoming Fathom electric vehicle, which is roughly the same size as the Maverick. However, Ford has not yet announced any plans to utilize the patent for a production feature.
