Lincoln’s current lineup of SUVs is all about providing “quiet flight” luxury, but things might be getting a bit rougher.
Automotive news reports that Lincoln is moving forward with plans to introduce a Ford Bronco-based body-on-frame SUV that would compete with the likes of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class.
“We have a program code and a timing for it,” Sam Fiorani, vice president of global vehicle forecasting at AutoForecast Solutions told the outlet. “We are expecting it, with production starting in late summer 2029, to be built next to the Bronco.”
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about this model. Industry sources mentioned it to Autoweek earlier this year. The current Michigan-made Bronco launched for the 2021 model year, which means it could be due for a significant redesign by the end of the decade that would be the ideal time to integrate a Lincoln variant into the mix.
Neither Lincoln or the Ford Motor Company has confirmed the report, declining to “comment on speculation about future products.”
Lincoln’s lineup is currently down to three models. The Nautilus, Aviator and Navigator are all still being manufactured, while it is also selling down inventory of the Corsair, which went out of production at the end of last year.
Lincoln did recently announce that Nautilus production is slated to be moved from China to the U.S. in 2030 to avoid the latest tariffs on Chinese imports. They are now 52.5% for the Nautilus, which is the brand’s best-selling model.
The Bronco-based vehicle wouldn’t have a lot of direct competition in the body-on-frame midsize luxury SUV segment. The only thing close to it aside from the G-Class would be the Lexus GX, and neither offers a removable roof option. Pricing would likely start below the Navigator’s $92,890.
If you’re interested, but can’t wait three years to buy a new SUV, Ford has something that might tide you over. The upcoming Bronco Filson is the most luxuriuos version of the Bronco to date. Its upgraded with improved sound insulation and gets the first set of leather-upholstered power seats with heat and ventilation. It’s also outfitted as a serious off-roader with the Bronco’s Sasquatch suspension package and a version of the turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 from the Bronco Raptor.
