GM’s heavy duty trucks are getting some heavy metal for 2027.
The Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD are set for an update next year that’s going to include an all-new Duramax diesel engine known as the Mongoose.
GM is teasing it with a video featuring a Mongoose facing off with a scorpion, which is the not-so-well-known codename for Ford’s PowerStroke diesel V8. Mongooses eat scorpions, if you don’t get the point.
GM didn’t show the new trucks or the engine, but confirmed that it will be an 8.3-liter turbodiesel V8 that is “built to dominate” and “packs power, capability, and confidence.”
The 2026 Silverado HD and Sierra HD are available with a Duramax 6.6-liter turbodiesel V8 rated at up to 470 hp and 975 lb-ft, while the PowerStroke 6.7-liter turbodiesel V8 is offered with up to 500 hp and 1,200 lb-ft Ram’s 6.7-liter Cummins 6.7-liter turbodiesel straight-six is rated at 430 hp and 1,075 lb-ft, but doesn’t have a cool animal nickname for GM to play off.
Ram famously included a T. rex eating a raptor in the engine bay of the TRX to highlight it being more powerful than the Ford F-150 Raptor.
GM said more info on the trucks would be coming soon, but hasn’t announced a date for their full reveals. Hopefully for it, diesel will retreat from today’s record high prices by the time it happens.

It’s also stepping up its engine game in the light duty segment, however, with the launch of new 5.7-liter and 6.6-liter gas V8s that outclass their Ford and Ram rivals with 402 hp/428 lb-ft and 481 hp/501 lb-ft, respectively.
They will be featured in the redesigned Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 that are set to go on sale before the end of the year.
