GM’s New V8 Truck Engines Are Coming To Kick Ford And Ram’s Butts — Here’s How Powerful They Are

The new 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 will be rolling into showrooms soon hauling a pair of new V8 engines.

GM is replacing its tried and true 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V8s with sixth-generation 5.7-liter and 6.6-liter motors.

Both feature longer strokes than the old mills, with new manifolds, port and direct injection systems, new lubrication systems with continuously variable oil pumps and on-engine oil cooler among the updates.

The 5.7-liter rated at 402 hp and 428 lb-ft, which beats both the Ford F-150’s 5.0-liter V8 and The Ram 1500’s 5.7-liter V8 on both figures. The 6.6-liter is rated at 481 lb-ft and 501 lb-ft, which outguns the Ram 1500 Rumble Bee’s 470 hp/455 lb-ft 6.4-liter V8.

Chevrolet said the Silverado 1500 will be able to tow up to 13,700 pounds with the 5.7-liter, which snatches the best-in-class title from the F-150’s 13,500 pounds.

The engines are built on the same architecture as the 6.7-liter V8 that’s featured in the 2027 Corvette Stingray, Corvette Grand Sport and Corvette Grand Sport X with 535 hp and 520 lb-ft.

Ford and Ram also offer supercharged V8s in the high performance F-150 Raptor R and Ram 1500 TRX, but GM hasn’t yet announced plans for competitors to those.

The Silverado and Sierra will also be available with updated versions of GM’s turbocharged 2.7-liter four-cylinder TurboMax, which gains 40 hp and 25 lb-ft for 350 hp and 455 lb-ft, and 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder DieselMax that retains its 305 hp and 495 lb-ft rating.

Pricing for GM’s new trucks and their engine options will be released closer to when deliveries begin later this year.
