The second-generation Tesla Roadster is set to be revealed on Oct. 1 and Tesla has posted a new preview video to social media with the message “See you next week.”
The clip shows the doors of a semi trailer being opened to reveal a dark space, which is then illuminated by a light bar that’s similar to the one son the Tesla Cybertruck and Cybercab.
It’s a low-resolution image that appears to depict the car sitting on some sort of plinth and covered with a sheet before it glitches to reveal the Roadster name. The styling is very different from the original concept unveiled in 2017, which had two separate headlight pods without a connecting light bar.
The new look comes two weeks after Tesla first announced the reveal date with an accompanying image of what appears to be the rear of the car, although its orientation isn’t clear. The Roadster will be equipped with a SpaceX cold gas thruster pack, which might be depicted by four illuminated plumes emerging from the vehicle. Elon Musk has said that the technology will aid acceleration and also allow the vehicle to fly short distances and that the demonstration will be the “most memorable product unveil ever.”
Tesla also holds a patent for an Adaptive Vehicle Aerodynamics for Downforce system that uses four fans mounted at the rear of a vehicle to create a vacuum beneath it, but has not yet confirmed if it will be used on the Roadster or another model.
Production isn’t expected to begin until sometime in 2027, at the earliest, which will mark a decade since the concept’s debut. Tesla has reopened the Roadster reservation book ahead of the reveal event and is now taking $50,000 deposits on the model. It has not yet announced pricing, which was advertised at $200,000 in 2017.
