The new flying Tesla Roadster may not need roads, but it needs good weather to get off the ground.
Tesla has officially postponed the second-generation Roadster’s reveal event from Oct. 1 to Oct. 15 because the forecast for this week is calling for severe storms to hit the location outside of Waco, Texas, later this week.
Tesla had previously warned invited guests that it might need to reschedule, but posted the news to X on Monday. The event is being held outside to demonstrate the vehicle’s SpaceX cold gas thruster pack option, which will allegedly allow it to fly in a hover for short distances. The optional equipment will also be used to improve its acceleration and make it capable of sprinting to 60 mph in less than one second.
“We’ve been tracking the weather closely with local meteorologists, but given the severe conditions predicted & because this event can only be held outdoors, we’ve made the difficult decision to reschedule,” the post said.
Tesla had been hoping to reveal the long-delayed car earlier this year on April 1, but missed that date as it put the finishing touches on its technology. Like all Teslas, the car will be powered primarily by electric drive, but recent teaser images suggest that it looks much different from the concept that debuted in 2017. Back then, Tesla was aiming to have it on sale by 2020, but other products were prioritized. Musk now says it will be in production sometime in 2027.
Tesla has started taking new reservations for the Roadster, which require a $50,000 deposit, but will also honor ones customers placed years ago based on the original concept, which had an estimated $200,000 starting price. The exact price and specifications for the final version have not yet been announced. Tesla also previously offered a limited edition Founders Series model for $250,000, which required full payment to secure a reservation.
