Is Tesla Planning A Roadster Flight Test For Wednesday?

The Tesla Roadster event announcement and FAA TFR map.

The second-generation Tesla Roadster’s postponed reveal is quickly approaching. The event is scheduled for Oct. 15 at the SpaceX testing facility in McGregor, Texas, outside Waco, two weeks after its original Oct. 1 date was scrapped due to bad weather.

The forecast is calling for clear and calm skies this time around, and there’s been no talk about rescheduling it again. In fact, unlike the several teasers that were released in the days leading up to Oct. 1, Tesla hasn’t been talking about it at all, other than to confirm it will be livestreamed at 7:55 p.m. CT.

The unveiling promises to be a spectacular event that will include a demonstration of the vehicle’s optional SpaceX cold gas thruster package, which can be used to improve its acceleration and, apparently, fly in a hover.

SpaceX acquired a temporary flight restriction (TFR) from the FAA from Sept. 18 through Oct. 2, 2026, to cover the original event, but just today received a new one for Wednesday, Oct. 14, from midnight to 5:04 p.m. local time. It lists “hazards” as the purpose and is in effect up to 5,000 feet for a 1.5 mile radius centered on the facility, while the previous restriction was for 10,000 feet.

It’s possible this is for an unlreated SpaceX project, but it could also mean a dress rehearsal for the Roadster demonstration is planned. No one expects that the car will be able to reach such great heights, and the TFR may be directed at spying drones, but you never know what will happen with a Tesla event. As of this writing, there is no TFR listed for Oct. 15.

Tesla has started taking reservations for the Roadster again, which require $50,000 refundable deposits, while the ones customers placed years ago are still valid. Pricing and specifications for the final production version of the car have not been announced, but the few images that have been released suggest that it will look much different from the concept that was revealed in 2017.
