The Buick GNX has been putting up some big numbers recently, but not at the drag strip.
A 30-mile example of the limited edition muscle car was sold at auction in September for $427,000, which is an all-time record for the model. Just 547 of the black coupes were built in 1987 and Buick hasn’t made anything like it since.
The GNX is an evolution of the Grand National that was a collaboration with ASC McLaren. It has an upgraded chassis along with a 3.8-liter turbocharged V6 that was officially rated at 276 hp and 360 lb-ft, but is actually much more powerful than that. It was the quickest American car of the era and could also outrun many exotic European sports cars in a straight line. The list price was $29,290, which was $10,995 more than a Grand National.
The GNX market has fluctuated over the past few years, but the $427,000 sale broke the previous $308,000 record set in 2022, suggesting it is hot right now. While GNXs typically trade hands at auctions, where buyer frenzies can push up the prices, one is currently listed for direct sale on ClassicCars.com.

The 1,872-mile car is all-original, save for a new, but correct, Powermaster accumulator ball for the brakes. The car is in Lockport, N.Y., and the owner claims it has never been run on ethanol blend fuel and is kept in heated storage during the winter. He’s the third owner and has had it for about two decades. Two sets of keys, the plastic shipping covers for the seats and all of the original documentation is included in the sale.

We’ll be keeping an eye on this one, which is priced at a valuation that slots between the 30-mile car and an 18,391.3-mile car that was sold at the Vicari Auctions event in Biloxi, Miss., in October for $194,940.
