A 18,000-Mile Buick GNX Was Just Sold For $194,940

A Buick GNX for sale at Vicari Auctions.

Two weeks after a 1987 Buick GNX with just 30 miles on its odometer was sold at auction for $427,000 to set a record for the rare muscle car, another one just went for a much lower price that was still very high.

The car was #461 of the 547 that were built and showed 18,391.3 miles on it as it crossed the block at the Vicari Auctions Cruisin’ the Coast event in Biloxi, Miss., on Saturday, Oct. 10. The car was in good, but clearly used condition, unlike the time capsule 30-mile car.

Bidding started at $100,000, but quickly rose to $150,000, then inched its way toward a high bid of $171,000, which is right around where Hagerty values a GNX in its condition. The final sale price was $194,940 after adding the auction’s commission fee.

Many of the GNXs that go up for auction have far fewer miles than the Biloxi car, some in the double digits. There’s even one out there that had 8.7 miles on it the last time it was sold in 2021 for $275,000, while a 568-mile car sold in 2022 held the record at $308,000 until the $427,000 sale.

The GNX is a modified version of the Grand National powered by a 276 hp turbocharged 3.8-liter V6 that made it one of the world’s quickest cars when it was new. Well, that’s the engine’s official rating. Independent tests discovered it really cranked out more like 300 hp and 400 lb-ft. The price new was $29,290, which was $10,995 more than the standard Grand National.

Buick never built another car like it, but there might be something on the way. The brand is rumored to be launching a new performance model on the same platform as the next generation Cadillac CT5 in about a year. It’s expected to be a four-door, not a coupe, but could carry the Grand National or GNX name.
