Fork This: Here’s What Caused The Fire At GM’s Factory Zero Electric Vehicle Plant
The General Motors Factory Zero electric truck production lines were idled on Tuesday evening due to a fire involving batteries on a loading dock.
But they didn’t spontaneously burst into flames.
The facility currently produces the GMC Hummer EV Pickup and SUV along with the Chevrolet Silverado EV.
A GM spokeswoman has told the Detroit Free Press that an unusual accident sparked the blaze.

“Our initial investigation indicates a forklift accidentally punctured a container with battery materials causing the fire,” she told the paper. “The investigation continues.”
The factory was mostly up and running again on Wednesday after the air in the buildings had cleared.
Production at the plant has been slowly ramping up since it officially opened in 2021 with a visit by President Biden.
Through the first three quarters of this year, 1,216 Hummer EVs and 18 Silverado EVs were delivered to customers.
