Breaking: Elon Musk Announces Major Tesla Cybertruck Change

Prior to its launch in 2023, Elon Musk predicted that the Cybertruck would account for 250,000 annual sales and perhaps even 500,000, but things didn’t work quite work out that way.

After delivering around 38,000 in 2024, shipments dropped to 20,000 in 2025 and were still going down at the and of the year.

Musk had previously said that if it was a flop, Tesla could potentially redesign it to look like a more conventional truck, but when he was asked about that during the company’s 2025 earnings call on Wednesday, he announced a different plan.

“We will transition the Cybertruck line to just a fully autonomous line,” Musk said. “There’s obviously a market there for cargo delivery, like you say, localized cargo delivery within a city, within a few hundred miles, something like that. There’s a lot of cargo that needs to move locally within a city, and an autonomous Cybertruck could be very useful for that.”

He didn’t elaborate further, but the comment came as he was discussing Tesla’s new focus on autonomy, which includes the upcoming launch of its two-seat Cybercab, which will be sold without a steering wheel.

It’s possible that he has the same idea for the Cybertruck, which could have its interior reorganized for cargo instead of passengers, or perhaps have a new body designed that is optimized for this purpose. Tesla has shown a prototype for a fully autonomous Robovan that can be configured for people or goods, but has not yet announced plans for production.

Along with his thoughts on the Cybertruck, Musk confirmed that the Model S and Model X will be discontinued this year and their factory space used to build the company’s Optimus humanoid robot, which is set to enter pilot production this year.
