A hole in the F2 schedule that left Colton Herta with the hopes he could compete in this year’s Indy 500 has been filled in.
F2 has added two races to make up for the ones lost with the cancelation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabia rounds, due to the conflict in the Middle East. The series will now be in Miami May 1-3 and in Montreal May 22-24, which is the weekend of the Indy 500.
Herta recently told The GAS podcast that he was “available” for the Indy 500 and on the lookout for a ride.
“I would love to be able to race in Indy again this year in the Indy 500,” he said. “What an amazing race and really a privilege to be able to do it for the last seven years.”
The IndyCar veteran has now confirmed that he’ll be focusing on driving for his Hitech F2 team that weekend.
“It’s a little bit of an up and down reaction, but overall, I’m excited,” Herta told Racer. “It’s two new tracks for me, two tracks that I’ve watched on TV that look like a lot of fun and places that look like they’re just a thrill to drive.
“So I’m excited on that front. Obviously, there’s a bit of me that hurts because you can’t do the 500 now, but this is taking the forefront of what I’m doing. So, we knew that something like this would be possible, even though we didn’t see it coming from this angle. But I’m excited for the new rounds, and I’m glad that F2 and Bruno Michel were able to find some sort of replacements for the missing two rounds.”
Herta is a Cadillac Formula 1 Team test driver and competing in F2 with the intent of moving up to the top series when a seat becomes available. He finished 16th and seventh in the first sprint and feature races of the season in Melbourne, Australia.
