The first day of qualifying for the Indy 500 was canceled on Saturday, due to a persistent rain soaking the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and an abbreviated format will be used on Sunday to set the field.
Starting at Noon, each of the 33 entries will get a single shot to record a four-lap average speed. The results will lock in the starting lineup for positions 13-33.
The fastest dozen move on to a Top 12 round to set positions 7-12, then the top six transfer to the final Firestone Fast Six round to determine positions 1-6, with the pole winner awarded a $100,000 prize.
IndyCar had planned on an expanded two-day qualifying format this year with an open 11 a.m.-5:50 p.m session, as usual, when drivers could make multiple attempts to set a speed. Positions 16-33 would be locked in during this round and fastest nine drivers would move onto the Top 12.

The drivers in 10th through 15th place would then open Sunday with a Final 15 round that would see the fastest three move on to the Top 12.
Sunday will kick off with a one-hour practice session split between two groups that starts at 9:30 a.m.
