Ford has been toying with the idea of introducing a four-door Mustang for a few years now and the project appears to be picking up steam.
Ford first showed a prototype to dealers in 2024 and has since filed a trademark on the Mach 4 name, which seems like a fit for the model.
Ford CEO Jim Farley also told Autocar in 2024 that “there will never be room for a small, two-row Ford SUV with a Mustang badge stuck on it. But could we do other Mustang body forms — a four-door or whatever? I believe we could, as long as these models have all the performance and attitude of the original.”
Yes, the electric Mustang Mach-E is a four-door SUV, but he was talking about an internal combustion engine Mustang, which the company commited to keeping in the lineup, even before the industry began rolling back its transition to electric vehicles.

The Wall Street Journal now reports that dealers have twice been shown four-door Mustang prototypes this year and told one will be in production by the end of the decade with a V8 engine and possible a hybrid powertrain.
A Mustang hybrid has been on the table for years and Farley has said there will be a hybrid version of every Ford model by 2030. Ford patented an interesting idea for a V8 hybrid a few years ago that incorporated electric motors into the engine block to create an all-wheel-drive Mustang.
The Mustang lineup is due to be redesigned in 2029, which would likely be when a four-door would be introduced.
Chevrolet should already have a four-door Camaro on sale by then and the Dodge Charger is already available in both two-door and four-door models, both with hatchbacks.
