1987 Buick GNX On Sale For Record $550,000

A 1987 Buick GNX

The early birds missed this worm.

A couple of weeks ago, American Cars And Racing reported on a 1987 Buick GNX with 1,872 miles on its odometer listed for sale on ClassicCars.com for $380,000.

Another 30-mile example of the rare muscle car had been auctioned a few weeks earlier in September for $427,000, setting a GNX record. That suggested that the $380,000 car was either priced right or a great deal. But the seller has apparently decided since then that the GNX market is heating up and is swinging for the fences.

The asking price is now $550,000, which would set a new high mark for the GNX and tie the highest price ever paid for a Buick. That honor belongs to the last 1987 Grand National that was built.

The Grand National is the car that the GNX is based on and is far more common. Buick sold more than 20,000 Grand Nationals in 1987 alone, while the entire GNX model run was 547 cars. The $29,290 coupe cost more than 50% more than the Grand National, which brought chassis upgrades and a boost to its turbocharged 3.8-liter V6 from 245 hp and 335 lb-ft to an official 276 hp and 360 lb-ft, which was found to be much more during independent tests.

However, along with being the last one, the $550,000 car was a time capsule with just 33 miles on the odometer. It was also autographed by both Lloyd Reuss, the Buick executive and future GM President who spearheaded the Grand National program, and his son Mark, who is GM President today.

Mark Reuss may actually be following in his father’s footsteps by masterminding a new Buick performance car that is reportedly joining the brand’s current lineup of mainstream SUVs. The model name hasn’t been confirmed, but it is expected to be a four-door based on the same platform as the next generation Cadillac CT5 and new four-door Chevrolet Camaro.

We’ll bring you the latest on all of when we have it and will be keeping an eye on the 1,872-mile car to see if it sells, or the price changes yet again.
