The final rounds of the NHRA Great Lakes Nationals at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park in Michigan were delayed from Sunday to Monday due to rain, but it was worth the wait as history was made at the inaugural event.
Kalitta Motorsports driver leader Shawn Langdon lined up against his teammate Doug Kalitta in the semifinals and went on to beat him with the fastest speed in NHRA history.
The 3.663-second run had a trap speed of 346.95 mph that smashed the 345 mph record Langdon set at the Southern Nationals in May.
Langdon followed it up with another blistering 346.15 mph run to win the final over Spenser Massey and kick off the Countdown to the Championship with the points lead.
“This is probably, arguably, one of the best tracks that we go to on tour. It’s very smooth, obviously you see it in the times and the mile-an-hour,” Langdon said after the win. “Give us a good track and good things will happen.”
The NHRA heads next to Rockingham Dragway in North Carolina for another first of its kind event, with the inaugural NHRA Nationals at The Rock on the weekend of Sept. 25-27.
