The new Tesla Roadster won’t be in production before 2028, but the line to get one is forming now. Tesla is taking reservations for the two-seat electric sports car. It hasn’t yet said what it will cost, but now we know at least how much it will cost.
Tesla says it will offer it in two street-legal versions. The base Performance model will have a 1,500 hp rear-wheel-drive powertrain, a “multi-mode suction system” that uses a vacuum effect to generate downforce and an adjustable active aerodynamic package, while the Thrust model adds a SpaceX cold gas thruster package to aid acceleration. The system’s thrusters stick out the rear of the car and can be used in short bursts to reduce the 0-60 mph acceleration time from 1.6 seconds to .85 seconds.
Tesla is asking customers to put down a $50,000 deposit to get on the list for the Performance model, which is surely far less than the car will cost, but it is asking a lot more for the Thrust trim. Tesla says its availability will be limited and that customers can only place one reservation each. They require a $250,000 deposit within 10 days to secure, but Tesla doesn’t say that will be the full final price. The amount is fully refundable up until the point where you configure your car, but there’s no telling when that will be.
Tesla previously started taking reservations in 2017 for the Roadster that it revealed back then that was set to start at $200,000, but never came to fruition. Those that are still held can be applied to the latest edition.

Of course, the most spectacular version of the Roadster is the single-seat Rocket model, which is the one that can purportedly “fly,” like the cars demonstrated flipping through the air at the Roadster’s Oct. 15 reveal. However, that trim is being offered as an invite-only proposition, and Tesla has not disclosed how to get an invite or how much it will cost to reserve one, if you do.
