There’s a 1987 Buick GNX on sale that’s a little unusual, because someone actually drove it.
Unlike the many time capsule examples of the turbocharged muscle car that show up at auctions with just hundreds of miles or less on their odometers, this one shows 35,745.
Denver’s Worldwide Vintage Autos has listed it on ClassicCars.com for $178,900, which sounds like a lot until you see that the only other GNX on the website has a $550,000 asking price.
That one has 1,872 miles on it and is in time capsule condition, while the 35K car shows a bit of wear and tear, although it is generally in fine shape. It runs, passed its last California emissions test in 2024 and the inspection report from the seller says everything works.

It has a few scratches and some visible corrosion on the chassis, but all of the glass is intact and there’s nothing major wrong with the interior. The car is No 111 of the 547 that were built. Even though it’s not a concours-quality example of the model, the discount price means that the new owner might actually be able to take it for a spin, and it should increase in value with the rest of them, anyway.

As far as that value is concerned, $550,000 is a swing for the fences. The record price paid for a GNX stands at $427,000 for a 30-mile car sold in September, while the average over the past year is $254,725, with the lowest being $186,030 for a 7,000-mile car last November, according to Classic.com.

The GNX is a skunkworks version of the Buick Grand National that was developed through a collaboration with ASC McLaren. Its signature feature is a turbocharged 3.8-liter V8 that was officially rated at 276 hp and 360 lb-ft, but really cranked out more than 300 hp and 400 lb-ft, which made it the quickest American car of the era.
