Sometimes it’s the little things that matter.

Christopher Bell was on his way to victory in the Enjoy Illinois 300 at World Wide Technology Raceway on Sunday, sweeping the first two stages and battling with Ryan Blaney for the lead in the closing laps when he ran into engine issues and had to slow down.

Bell got some help from his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Martin Truex Jr. who gave him a push to get him through the final laps and salvage a seventh place finish.

Immediately after the race, Bell didn’t know what the problem is, but said the engine was giving him trouble at high RPM and that there was a little smoke.

The problem has now been diagnosed.

“We broke a valve spring,” Bell told Fox Sports at Sonoma Raceway ahead of this weekend’s Toyota Save Mart 350.

“We haven’t had valve spring problems for a long period of time, I think it was 2022 we did have a rough go of it with the valve springs, but we haven’t seen that in a period of time now.”

Bell added, “I think and they think, too, that it was just a random part failure and we’re not expecting any more.”
