Hopefully you’re not afraid of heights!

Rivian has filed for a patent on a pop-up camper design for its electric pickups that stows completely within the bed.

The idea is to provide the best aerodynamic efficiency to help preserve an electric vehicle’s driving range.

A variety of options are presented, but the basic form includes a tonneau that is lifted up to become the roof as two platforms fold down and rest on the top of the bedsides.

These provide sleeping areas for two campers, while other occupants can use the bed floor.

Designs for internal and external supports are depicted, apparently depending on what type of material the tent is made from. It also shows it with possibilities for windows and a skylight.

The main hitch to the design is that the current Rivian R1T’s bed is just 4.5 feet long, which would make this primarily a solution for children.

The automaker hasn’t announced plans for a larger model, but also hasn’t ruled out adding one to its lineup in the future.

RIVIAN NAMED MOST SATISFYING BRAND BY OWNERS

The Rivian R1S SUV is already an excellent choice for campers, as its cargo floor can easily fit a six-foot-tall person when the second row seats are folded down.

The Rivians also have a camp mode that uses their adjustable suspension systems to level out the vehicles on uneven surfaces and, since there is no exhaust to worry about, can provide climate control for hours on end if there is enough of a battery charge available.
