Where is Jessica Fletcher when you need her? It hopefully doesn’t involve a murder, but there’s a mystery in Maine that needs solving.
Underwater explorer Jason Smith was piloting a drone in Sebago Lake a few weeks ago looking for an old snowmobile that he had spotted on the bottom over the winter, but he found something bigger.
Smith came across a 1974 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 under 55 feet of water in a channel between Frey Island and the mainland known as the Notch.
“I just happened to see a shadow off in the distance and just started heading towards it and all of a sudden I was looking at a car,” Smith told CBS 13 News.
The car was recovered by Canders Diving Services. Its windows were open and was still wearing its gold paint and Z28 graphics, but the interior was badly deteriorated and there was enough rust to cause it to crumble as it was pulled to shore. It didn’t have any license plates on it and the only personal item was a tent in the trunk, but there was nothing to indicate exactly how long it was in the water.

Reports of a similar car’s disappearance have not yet been discovered, but the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office is working with the Bureau of Motor Vehicles to track down information on its previous owner, based on a partial vehicle identification number (VIN) that was found. While there is a vehicle ferry to Frey Island, the working theory is that the car was driven onto the ice during the winter and fell through.
The 1974 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 was “the Camaro for people who are sincerely interested in cars and really enjoy driving,” according to the brochure. It came with a 350-cubic-inch V8 rated at 245 hp and 280 lb-ft and had a starting price around $3,500.
